A Message from Mesmer Kava

Discovering the Gift of Kava

When I first came to kava, I knew it would change my life in a profound way.  It provided a level of relaxation that was much needed in my stressful life.  I found flow with my creative pursuits more easily.  I experienced joy, happiness and a lightening of my social experience.  All this from a healthy, life-promoting, plant-based beverage – quite the contrary to the other “relaxation” beverages out there.

What I didn’t anticipate was that it would positively impact the lives of so many friends with whom I shared.  They immediately saw the benefits, the call, the desire to smooth their experience of life in a profoundly beneficial way.

The demand for more increased, and I realized that it would be a disservice to not provide easy access to this divine elixir from the South Pacific.  And thus, Mesmer Kava was born.

After over a year of getting the word out, hosting gatherings and kava socials and speaking, educating and serving up kava at retreats and events, we’re very excited to announce that we have opened our first physical location!

You can find us right near the waterfront in Burlington, Vermont.  We hope that you’ll join us in our awesome, cozy, quirky little space to relax, unwind, have great conversation, connect with friends new and old, or just simply kick back and do a little stress-free work.

It’s a big step for us, but it’s just the beginning.  We’re so excited to bring something so unique and magical to Vermont!

What is Kava?

Kava is a traditional drink made from the roots of the kava plant (Piper methysticum).  Native to the islands of the South Pacific such as Vanuatu, Fiji, Tonga and other Micronesian, Melanesian and Polynesian islands, it has an over 3,000 year history of ceremonial, medicinal and social use.  The drink is prepared by kneading the ground up root of the shrub in water, resulting in a brown, earthy and often peppery beverage (a member of the pepper family, piper methysticum translates to intoxicating pepper – and though bliss and calm-inducing, one of the remarkable qualities of this beverage is that it is not actually intoxicating like alcohol).

Kava is not typically consumed for the taste, but instead for the effects.  That said, there are ways to enjoy a more pleasant tasting “mocktail” experience – just ask us how!

What are the Effects?

While different cultivars provide different effects, the effect in common amongst all of them is a sense of peace, calm, tranquility and an easing of anxieties.

In addition to the fundamental effects, some cultivars are experienced as “heavy” and very relaxing to the body – almost sedating – while others could be considered “heady” and promote more of an uplifting, social, euphoric experience.

Healthy, Safe & Legal

Kava is an extensively studied herb which is both safe and healthy.  While there are many positive physical and mental health benefits, some of the more prominent and sought-after include its anti-anxiety effects, it’s been shown to be an anti-inflammatory, is neuroprotective, reduces pain sensations and many use it to promote deep, restful sleep.

How Would You Describe It?

Kava is like a massage
for the mind.
